Is your CV up-to-date?
I get contacted a lot by people who need an urgent resume update because a recruiter has just contacted them, or their dream company has an opening.
I don’t need to tell you that people usually panic then and try to write the resume themselves – which often results in a scribbled document and a massive disappointment…
So, when and how frequently do you need to update your resume?
🟢 Ideally, if you are not looking for a new job, once every 3-6 months, or after each performance review you have with your manager
🟢 When you notice that changes are coming – change in company ownership, downsizing, layoffs
🟢 Before you start actively looking for a new job – after you set your target role, industry, or employer
Here is how to do it:
✅ List the accomplishments and results you achieved since the last update - always use metrics!
✅ Describe shortly every change in your role if your employer stayed the same
✅ Include new skills gained or certifications acquired (remove anything that seems obsolete)
You’ll have a master document then, and it will be easy to adapt it quickly to the new opportunity when it comes.
